ANTUN MATES was born in Zagreb in 1945. He graduated from the Zagreb Art Academy in 1969 in the class of Miljenko Stancic, famous Croatian figurative artist. In 1988, as a reputed and renowned watercolourist, Mates devoted himself with great intensity to aquatints publishing his first album of aquatints "With Us And Without Us", accompanied by a poem of Croatian bard Dragutin Tadijanovic. Subsequently more albums followed : "The Ban" (1990, text by J. Bratulic), "Born in Zagreb" (in two volumes, 1992 and 1993, text by M. Peic); "Light And Reflections Of My Native Place" (1994, text by J. Bratulic), "European Strolls" (1996, text by J. Bratulic and G. Tribuson). Mates has held 40 one-man exhibitions and participated in more than 100 group exhibitions in Croatia and abroad ranging from Europe, North America and to Australia (Torontno, New York, Los Angeles, Mainz, Frankfurt, Munich, Melbourne, Adelaide, Portland, Swan Hill, Mildura etc.). "Mates - Paintings And Memories" is a monograph written by Goran Tribuson, Croatian writer, and published in the autumn of 1996. Works of Antun Mates can be found in numerous private collections throughout the world and in following galleries : Modern Gallery, National and University Library, Prints and Drawings Department of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, City Museum (all situated in Zagreb) and in the Constitutional Museum of South Australia in Adelaide.
